We are an 'all volunteer' organization. All adoption fees go toward paying our vet bills for the adopted dog.
This includes medications, spay/neuter, all shots, heartworm testing, microchip,
dentals, surgeries, skin treatments, heartworm treatment, setting broken
bones, or any other surgeries deemed necessary by our vets. Puppies cost much more since they need 3 sets of puppy shots, and
de-worming (occasionally multiple times). Pregnant and nursing
mothers need more vet care: x-rays and vitamin shots (C and B-12).
Some dogs have medical needs costing much more than the adoption fee. Wilson (pictured
above) cost UnderDog $800 in vet care before he found his new home.
We do not have a shelter. We have no payroll, bonuses, gifts, business lunches
or admin costs. This
website was also donated. We use our own cars, gas, etc. to transport shelter dogs. Every
cent that we collect goes directly to vet costs.
Most dogs from breeders have never stood on grass
or worn a collar before. We take these unwanted dogs into our homes, love them,
house-train them, and teach them to walk on leashes. We strive to
address all bad behaviors prior to adoption. We further take them out in public to see
how they will interact with other people, dogs, cats and especially children. This assists us in evaluating the best home for each particular animal. This is never done haphazardly. We really try to match the dog and the adopters. Most times we succeed, sometimes (very seldom) we fail.
Most shelter dogs are sick and
stressed. We don't know their
background and they don't know our schedules. They have accidents on our carpets, floors, beds, etc.
They may even chew our shoes and other personal items. All of which we repair or replace from our own funds.
Most shelter dogs arrive loaded with fleas and ticks.
Sometimes our vet has to shave them completely. Most often we must
bathe them several times to remove the parasites. Our hard
work makes a big difference in the health and well-being of these
shelter dogs. After we have cleaned them up and vetted them, it's
hard to believe it's the same dog in the shelter photo.
Foster families do not make any money from adoption fees.
Fosters are all volunteers. UnderDog Rescue provides the foster
home with everything the dog needs. UnderDog has an account at
both of our approved vets, and there are no out-of-pocket vet expenses
for the foster home. Some foster homes choose to buy food, toys, collars, leashes etc. and pay for all of this out of
their own pockets, so that adoption fees and donations go directly to vet
costs. We do this because we love these dogs and want to make a
difference.
